Slowing Down

After the magic of Homer (and it was magic), we've spent the last several days easing into a slower rhythm. The road trip pace finally caught up with us - a little road weary, a little leg tired - so instead of moving from place to place every day, we decided to set up camp and just be for a while;.

The past week has taken us through Hope, Portage, Whittier and now Girdwood, where we're spending three whole days - a record-breaking pause for this trip! The slower pace has been exactly what we needed.

We've been putting in some solid miles on the bikes, riding through forests, along rivers, and on scenic trails that seem to pop straight out of postcards. One of the most memorable moments? A bear ran right across the trail in front of me mid-ride. It was the kind of heart-pounding, oh-my-gosh-did-that-just-happen moment that reminds you exactly where you are: Wild Alaska.

We also hiked up to Byron Glacier, which, as usual for Alaska, was stunning. The air was crisp, the views were ridiculous, and the company - well, we're still talking to each other after all these miles, so that says something!

With the slower days, we've also had time for some of the finer things: a few really nice meals out, live music in the evenings, and meeting some new friends along the way. It's funny how slowing down opens things up - more conversations, more laughter, more time to take in the little details.

Right now, we are holed up in Girdwood. It rained hard last night - over half an inch, and it's still coming down. we've set up the screen tent over the fire  pit, so it's cozy enough for a lazy day. In fact, it is 11:00AM, and we're still in our jammies.

This part of the trip feels like a little exhale - time to breathe, rest, enjoy each other, and just take in Alaska at our own pace. Turns out, staying put for a while can be just as memorable as going somewhere new.

Tomorrow we hit the road again. Meeting Bob's sister, Karen and her husband Gary for breakfast in Anchorage.  They are just ending their Alaska Cruise.  It will be nice to see family and to hear all about their cruise.

We hope that everyone is enjoying these last days of summer.  Enjoy!

Love,

Bob, Sherry and Boone
